Advisor Guidance
This page provides practical guidance for advisors working with agricultural producers who want to send samples to OfotLab for analysis. We provide tips on sampling, labeling technology, and specialized analysis types.
Sample Bag Labeling Technology
Correct labeling of samples is critical to prevent confusion and ensure traceability:
Unique Identifiers
Each sample bag should be labeled with:
- Sample number (unique for each sample)
- Date (when the sample was taken)
- Feed type (hay, silage, corn, mixed ration, etc.)
- Producer (name or ID)
- Storage/Field (where the material comes from)
Use clear writing and permanent marker. Also attach submission form inside the bag.
Batch Labeling
If you send multiple samples from the same batch or silo lot, label them as "Batch A - Sample 1, Batch A - Sample 2" etc. This makes it easier to understand results.
Sample Shipment
We recommend using return envelopes to make submission easy and cost-effective:
Use Return Envelopes
- Simpler and cheaper than separate postage
- Samples arrive safely
- We cover return postage
Multiple Samples in One Envelope
A return envelope can contain multiple samples! This makes it cost-effective to send several samples simultaneously.
Tip: Coordination with other advisors or producers can significantly reduce postage costs.
Priority Marking
If you send samples with priority, mark the bag clearly. Call us to notify that samples are on their way.
Analysis Types - Selection and Conditions
Mix vs Full Ration Analysis
| Analysis Type | What It Means | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Mix | Analyzes the entire ration mixed together | When you want to know the nutritional content of the entire feed ration as given |
| Full Ration | Analyzes each component separately, calculates composition | When you want to understand composition of ingredients (better for adjustment) |
NIR vs Chemical Analysis
| Method | Speed | Accuracy | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIR | Fast (2-3 days) | Good for major parameters | Routine analyses, high volume |
| Chemical | Slow (5-7 days) | Very accurate, all parameters | Critical analyses, volatile compounds (silage) |
Specialized: Mold & Yeast
Important: Samples for mold and yeast analysis should be sent in vacuum-sealed bags or plastic pouches. This prevents yeast leakage during transport.
Vacuum-sealing or airtight plastic bag is mandatory for these analyses!
Trace Elements (Trace Minerals)
Analysis of trace elements such as selenium, cobalt and molybdenum is sent to an external laboratory.
- Time frame: Approximately one month for results
- Planning: Assume this timeframe when planning mineral programs
Submission Form Requirements
The submission form (lab form) is critical for us to process samples correctly:
Mandatory Fields
| Field | Requirement | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sample Name | Required | Clear name of the feed |
| Producer Name | Required | Or producer number from register |
| Analysis Type | Required | Specify which program (NIR standard, chemical, full ration, etc) |
| Date Taken | Required | When the sample was taken from the feed source |
| Feed Type | Required | Hay, silage, corn, mixed ration, etc |
| Contact Info | Required | Phone or email for results |
Incomplete Forms
Samples without minimum information (name + organization/producer number) cannot be analyzed. We will contact you if something is missing, but this delays processing.
Technical Tips
Whole-Crop vs Grass Analysis
Whole-crop (corn, whole-crop cereal) is analyzed as its own category. Grass and hay are analyzed separately. State clearly which feed type it is!
Spore Analysis
Spore analysis (spore count) analyzes only anaerobic spores that indicate silage quality. This is chemical analysis and requires submission with standard chemical setup.
Sample Size
- Minimum: 50 grams for standard analyses
- Recommended: 100-200 grams for safety
- Mark clearly for weight if over 200g
Sample Storage
Before submission, store samples in:
- Cool, dry place (not refrigerator unless fresh material)
- Airtight bag to prevent moisture absorption
- Away from heat/sunlight that can affect composition
Quality Assurance
OfotLab has strict quality control:
- All analyses run in duplicate
- Daily instrument calibration
- Reference materials for validation
- ISO accreditation ensures accuracy
