How to Take a Sample

A correctly taken sample is necessary to obtain representative and reliable analysis results.

Sampling with probe

Sampling Method

What You Need

A hollow probe (sampling probe) that you bore into the silage, hay bale or grass section. The probe should be at least 60 cm long to get a representative sample from the entire depth of the silo or bale.

Sample Collection

Collect samples from several bales within the same batch and mix them together. At least 8-10 bores from the same batch or area provides the best representativeness. This ensures that the sample reflects the average quality of the material.

Close Bore Holes

After taking a sample, you should close the bore holes with plastic. This prevents moisture from entering and damaging the rest of the silo or hay bale.

Sample Size

You need approximately 1 liter of sample material. This is the amount that gives the best results with NIR analysis.

Larger Samples

If you have larger samples, you can divide them. Mix the sample thoroughly and divide it with a plate or knife. Each sub-sample will then be representative of the whole sample.

Storage Before Submission

Wet samples can be frozen before submission. Freezing ensures that quality is preserved during transport and storage.

Tips for Best Results

  • Take samples from the same batch or silo lot
  • Take multiple bores to achieve representativeness
  • Avoid samples from edge or top of silos (may be drier/different quality)
  • Pack the sample well before submission
  • Remember to fill out the submission form with correct information
