Fermentation Products
Lactic Acid
Primary fermentation product in good quality silage. High lactic acid indicates proper fermentation.
Acetic Acid
Secondary fermentation product. Moderate levels are acceptable, but high levels may indicate poor fermentation.
Butyric Acid
Indicates secondary fermentation and clostridial activity. Should be very low (near zero) in good quality silage.
pH
Low pH (below 4.5) indicates good preservation. Higher pH may indicate spoilage risk.
