Nitrate and Ruminants

Understanding Nitrate Risk

High nitrate levels in feed can be converted to toxic nitrite in the rumen of cattle and sheep, causing poisoning.

Acceptable Levels

Below 500 ppm is generally considered safe. Levels between 500-1000 ppm require monitoring. Above 1000 ppm poses serious risk.

Management

If nitrate levels are high, dilute with low-nitrate feed or use treated feed. Contact a nutritionist for guidance.
